How to OEM/ODM a Security Camera: Branding Process, MOQ & Lead Times

Last updated: October 9, 2026 · Written by the KeenCamPro factory team
Private-label demand is at record levels — U.S. store-brand sales reached about $282.8 billion last year, growing nearly three times faster than national brands, and unit share hit an all-time high. The same logic applies to cameras: more importers and e-commerce sellers want their own brand on a proven product instead of reselling someone else's. This guide, written by the factory you'd be working with (we build and export 100+ camera models and run OEM/ODM programs for brands in 40+ countries), explains the process in plain language — including the questions most buyers forget to ask. After reading, you'll know: the difference between OEM and ODM, the 7-step process from first email to container, what MOQ and lead times realistically look like, and what to send us to get a concrete proposal.Short answer: OEM = your label on our proven product (fast, low risk); ODM = we adapt design/features to your spec (more work, more differentiation). Process: requirements → selection → sample → approval → production → QC → shipping. MOQ and lead times are quoted per model and config — anyone promising "any MOQ, 7 days, everything certified" without asking about your product is not a factory you want.

OEM vs ODM vs private label: the terms, clarified

Term | What it means | Risk & effort
Private label | Your brand on an existing product | Lowest — proven product, your logo
OEM | Factory makes to your label/spec on an existing platform | Low — minor changes (color, logo, box, app name)
ODM | Factory designs/adapts to your requirements | Higher — custom hardware, firmware, longer development
Most camera buyers start with OEM (branding on existing models) and move to ODM once volumes justify custom work. Both are our daily business; the honest difference is development time and MOQ, not "better/worse."Why now? The same PLMA data shows store brands outgrowing national brands for years, and e-commerce platforms have made private-label entry cheap: no factory, no inventory at first — samples, then a small first order, then your own listing. For cameras specifically, a branded solar or 4G model with real specs and photos already outperforms unbranded generic listings in both search and conversion.

The 7-step OEM/ODM process

Requirements — market, price point, channel, volumes, certifications needed. The more specific, the better: "Spain, online retail, $25–35 band, CE, 500 units to start" gets you a real answer; "give me your best price" gets you a menu.
Selection — we shortlist existing models that fit; for ODM, a spec sheet or reference product.
Proposal — price, MOQ, lead time, packaging options, certification status per model — in writing.
Sample — you order samples of your shortlist; test in your market first. Sample cost is typically credited or discounted on the first production order.
Approval — you approve brand artwork (logo, box, manual, app name) and any firmware changes. Written sign-off prevents disputes later.
Production — after deposit and artwork sign-off; QC on the line and before shipment. Payment is usually deposit + balance before shipment for new customers.
Shipping — sea/air freight; you receive QC photos, packing lists and shipping documents (invoice, packing list, certificate of origin where applicable).

What MOQ actually means

MOQ is per model and configuration, not a global number. Practical guidance:
OEM branding on existing models — the lowest MOQ tier; suitable for trial and small markets.
Custom packaging / app name — slightly higher, because of print and firmware setup runs.
ODM (new hardware or major changes) — higher still, reflecting tooling, testing and certification work.
Two honest notes: (1) a "no MOQ at all" offer usually means hidden costs elsewhere — ask what changes are included; (2) MOQ also protects you: consistent batches keep per-unit cost and quality stable.

Lead times & logistics

Samples — fastest for stock models; check current schedule when you inquire.
Production — depends on volume, SKU mix and season; Q3–Q4 is peak season worldwide, so plan year-end orders early.
Sea freight — allow 3–6 weeks depending on route (Europe, North America, LATAM, Middle East).
Safety buffer — holding 30–45 days of best-seller stock cushions delays and lets you answer "in stock?" instantly.

Branding options, from light to deep

Sticker/silk logo — fastest, lowest MOQ.
Carton + manual + accessories — your brand on the box and documents.
App name & firmware splash — the app shows your brand at launch; your logo in firmware.
Full ODM — custom casing, lens/feature changes, custom app behavior.
Each level adds lead time and MOQ; most importers start at levels 1–3. We also provide packaging templates and artwork guidance, so you don't need a designer for a first branded run.

Quality control

Ask what QC actually happens, not what certificate folders exist:
Incoming — components checked on arrival.
In-line — key stations (lens, sensor, WiFi, battery) tested during assembly.
Pre-shipment — each lot sampled/tested; you receive photos of the actual units and packing.
Verification options — third-party inspection and live video checks from the line are both available; agree the method before production.
Warranty handling — confirm the spare-part and replacement policy before ordering, not after a failure.

What makes a factory trustworthy

Specifies, doesn't promise. A serious factory answers "certification for your region? let me confirm per model" — not "everything certified."
Shows the actual product. Samples, photos, video calls from the line — not only renders.
Answers in writing. Price, MOQ, lead time, payment terms in a written quotation.
Asks about your market. Band support, voltage, language, packaging norms — a partner that asks is doing its homework.
Red flags: guaranteed rankings, "unlimited customization at no cost," pricing that changes after samples, or pressure to pay everything upfront.Reducing risk on a first order: start small — order samples, then a small production batch; ship in two lots if volumes allow; keep payment terms standard (deposit + balance before shipment); and put price, MOQ, lead time and warranty in writing. A factory that accepts a structured first order is one that expects a long relationship.

FAQ

What is the difference between OEM and ODM for cameras? OEM: your brand on our existing product (fast, low MOQ). ODM: we adapt or design to your spec (custom casing/features/firmware, higher MOQ and longer development).
What is your minimum order quantity? MOQ depends on model and configuration — OEM branding on existing models is the lowest tier. Send your shortlist and target market, and we quote per SKU.
Can you put my brand on the camera and packaging? Yes — logo on the unit, your carton/manual design, and app branding. This is level 1–3 branding; full custom casing is ODM and quoted separately.
Who owns the app and firmware in OEM? Our app platform (EseeCloud/V380 Pro/Hieasy app, etc.) is used under your brand name; full firmware/app ownership is an ODM discussion. Confirm the level you need in your inquiry.
Can I order samples first? Yes — samples are the standard first step. Test in your market before scaling.
Do you handle warranties and spare parts? We support warranty via spare parts and replacements per agreement. Confirm the policy in your order contract rather than assuming.
What payment terms do you accept? Confirm in the quotation — typically deposit + balance before shipment for new customers, with terms reviewed after history is established.

What to prepare before your inquiry

For a concrete proposal in one round, send:

Branding level — logo only, custom box, app name, or full ODM.
Volumes & target price — first order, annual estimate, price band.
Certifications needed — CE/FCC/RoHS etc. for your region.
Timeline — when you need samples and when you need stock.
